Welp, this post comes as usual!
Title: 奏 -kanade- (Performance)
This is a Touhou multi-genre arrangement album brought to you by Diao ye zong.
The theme of this time is “Music”. I think of Illusory Maidens and their music. Then, I put them altogether.
What kind of music will they be related to? Taking a direct approach, as well as more of an usual one, I compiled it all into one disc!
Tweleve songs in total. You too, can definitely listen to the sounds they are playing!

Some comebacks are made!
Before getting on to the vocal track, if you have a closer look a the titles of the instrumental tracks, they are freaking long and complicated to translate (English title translations belong to Nazohato). The theme of the album is “music”, so I think RD has put a lot of dedication to the instrumental titles. I mean, I haven’t seen this before.
The eight track in the list, Esoterian Fantasia, is pretty similar to 交響詩「魔帝」より Ⅱ.神話幻想 (Kokyoushi ‘Matei’ yori II. Shinwa Gensou) (featured in -sakasa-) back in C94. It’s an extract of a specific theme (?). Not to mention both of Esoterian Fantasia and Matei share the same background, Makai. Matei is based on Shiki’s theme aka the creator/ruler of Makai. While Esoterian Fantasia is based on Stage 5 theme of UFO (related to Hijiri Byakuren, who was formerly sealed in Makai). Both tracks are good. They are both classy and majestic. However, RD only keeps it at instrumental so we couldn’t speculate much about its plot.
The eleventh track, a Sumireko’s theme. We haven’t seen her since -omoi-. Back in -omoi- she has a vocal track. I don’t know if her appearance would be related to the plot from -utsutsu- or not. I still think she’s “dead”. spirited away didn’t do anything to the -utsutsu- plot. But who knows. This is just a non-vocal track, so I just feel free to think of any theories I could think of.
Overall, RD follows jazz for some of the non-vocal tracks. I peronally love jazz, but RD mixes it with some pop-ish vibes… It would take me a while to really enjoy them.
Now, for the vocal tracks.
“the song i love”. The three themes are Reimu-related but Reimu herself didn’t appear on the cover (read below for more details). The track is typical, like every other song RD writes about Reimu so I don’t have many thoughts on this one.
Flandre’s track captures my attention first. The vocalist is nayuta. It reminds me of the Flan’s track she performed back in -kakage- (R13/2016), which is 禁符「フォービドゥン・ゲーム」 (Forbidden Sign “Forbidden Game). I highly suggest you to have a listen.
If Forbidden Game is a hardcore, strong track, Closed Rain is a softer one. With some dripping sound effects, it makes the song have a soothing vibe. However, its content is something we should be focusing on. An overall soothing vibe indeed, but it also brings a shady/mysterious feeling.
A rabbit-related theme was last appeared in -tsutae- (C93/2016). The track is 狂言「跳ね玉兎」aka MoonJumper which was previously featured in a compilation album by Toranoana back in 2015. So, it has been a long time. 玉兎遠隔群体電波通信網 (I’ll call the track “Rabbit Radio Network” for short”) shares the same cheerful feeling with MoonJumper. But I somehow feel a little bit being rushed this time.
Mystia’s lastest appearance was in -motome- (R12/2015). So, it was like 4 years ago…? Die Lorelei is a good emotional pop ballad song. For 「」, our vocalists paired up! On the album cover, Mystia is standing next to Kyouko so I believe that the “noisy” girls will be doing something outrageous…?
Sanae’s image was mentioned in 蛙姫 (-metori-). The song is quite normal, to be honest. RD’s previous Sanae songs are better than 世界中の誰よりも. But let see where would the contents lead us to.
If かばねのうた is actually about Cirno/Three Fairies, then the last time they got a spot in an RD album was -motome- as well. However, the short ver. in the XFD doesn’t say much about the contents. This song is currently leaving a big question mark to me. “Corpse Song” in a Fairy Wars arrangement…
“the song i hate”. WASURARURU MONOGATARI VIBES I TELL YOU! But not that depressed. I have to agree with Nazohato, the song i hate is like a mixed version of “Kaze no Yukue” and “Wasuraruru Monogatari”. The last time we saw Akyuu, things didn’t go so well for her. So let’s see this time how this would turn out.
I have my own reasons to believe this album will somehow ended up like -utsutsu-.
- The Color Theme
Hanada-sensei uses pink as the major color and then expands to a variety of colors. That leads to the covers bring an upbeat vibe. There is a difference is that in -utsutsu-, the colors are pastel tones, while -kanade- is darker and higher in contrast.
- The Composition
After having a look at of both album covers, I see Hanada-sensei arranges the character in a circle to cover/warp something in the middle.
- The Number of Characters
For -utsutsu-, the girls starred on the album cover are the ones who have their themes to be arranged as the vocal tracks. For -kanade-, the cast with their theme songs used in the album are all featured! Some exceptions (so far) are Reimu, Nitori and Cirno/Three Fairies. And hey, Koishi is there…
- The Theme Itself
“Girls with their dreams”? “Girls with their music”? Personally, I don’t think the theme would just merely stop there, especially when RD is a master making of multi-layer concepts.
I’ll insert the covers side by side for you to notice the points I have listed above.
If you are reading this line, I’m super greatful that you’ve come this far. What I’ve written above are just my hypotheses about this concept. To be honest, I’m not an expert when it comes to RD music, but I always try my best to link the information/facts/previous theories I know to every album. This post took me a (long) while because I have to look up for the information of the albums and events.
Again, thanks for reading this far.
